Caffeine uses Internet Identity for authentication. There are no passwords — instead, your device creates a cryptographic key that acts as your login. This makes accounts more secure, but it also means login works differently from what most people expect.
How Internet Identity works
When you log in to Caffeine for the first time on a device, Internet Identity creates a passkey tied to that specific device and browser. That passkey is your identity on that device. No email address, no password, nothing to remember — the device itself is the credential.
This also means that each device and browser creates a separate identity by default. If you log in on your laptop and then on your phone without linking them first, you will see two completely separate Caffeine accounts with different projects.
Linking your devices
To use the same account across multiple devices, you need to link them through Internet Identity before you need to. You cannot link a new device after losing access to the original one without a recovery method in place.
To manage your identity and link devices, go to id.ai. From there you can:
- Add additional devices to your identity
- Set up a recovery passkey or seed phrase
- View and manage all devices linked to your account
Set up at least one recovery method as soon as you start using Caffeine. This is the only way to regain access if your primary device is lost or unavailable.
My projects are missing after logging in
If you log in and see no projects, you are most likely signed in with a different identity than usual. This happens when:
- You are using a different device or browser than normal
- Your browser was updated or reset and the passkey was removed
- You are in a private/incognito window, which does not have access to saved passkeys
Try logging out and logging back in from the device you normally use. If your projects appear there, link your devices at id.ai so you can access them from anywhere.
Two accounts cannot be merged
If you have been using two separate identities — for example, one on your laptop and one on your phone — those are two distinct accounts. It is not possible to merge them into one, or to transfer projects, credits, or subscription status from one account to the other.
The only path forward is to pick one account as your primary and link your devices to it going forward at id.ai. Any credits or projects on the other account cannot be moved.
Lost access completely
If you have lost access to your primary device and have no recovery method set up, recovery options are very limited. Contact support — the team will assess what is possible, but there is no guaranteed path to account recovery without a linked device or recovery phrase.
This is why setting up recovery at id.ai before you need it is important.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no password reset option?
Caffeine uses Internet Identity, which does not use passwords. There is no password to reset. Your login credential is the passkey stored on your device. To access your account from a new device, you need either a linked device or a recovery method set up in advance at id.ai.
Can I use the same account on multiple devices?
Yes, but you need to link them first. Log in on your primary device, go to id.ai, and add your other devices. Once linked, all devices share the same identity and see the same projects.
I see a different account when I log in on my phone. What happened?
Your phone created a new identity when you first logged in. Your original account and projects are still on the other device. Link the two identities at id.ai while you still have access to both, or log in from your original device.
Can I merge two accounts or transfer credits between them?
No. Two separate accounts cannot be merged, and credits cannot be transferred from one account to another. If you have ended up with two accounts, pick one as your primary and link your devices to it at id.ai. Anything on the other account — credits, projects, subscription — stays there.
What is a recovery phrase and do I need one?
A recovery phrase is a backup for your Internet Identity that lets you regain access from any device, even if you lose your original one. It is strongly recommended. Set one up at id.ai under your identity settings.
